I was at Bachman’s wholesale on Wed for their spring educational event. There I attended a seminar put on by Iseli Nursery (www.iselinursery.com). Iseli produces some of the most interesting Conifers and Japanese Maples and many of these are found at our local nurseries.
Here is a list of plants that are both on their favorite list as well as mine:
- Mother Lode Juniper
- Varied Directions Larch
- Acrocona Spruce
- Macopin White Pine
- Taxus (Yew) cuspidata ‘Nana Aurescens”
- Moon Frost Hemlock
Here is a list of interesting ones I’d like to try:
- Pusch Norway Spruce
- North Star Spruce
- Sester Dwarf Spruce
- Hetz Wintergreen Arborvitae
- Mini Twists White Pine
Exciting news on the Japanese Maple front…..they are crossing Korean Maple (hardy in our zone but lacks red leaf) with Japanese Maple (beautiful red leaves, but not hardy) to produce some beautiful specimens that can take cold down to minus 32! I’d expect to see these in the next couple years!

Happy Easter,
